Violence erupts after Dal Khalsa members throw two severed heads of cows near temples at Katra Ahluwalia and Bazaar Kathian in Amritsar. Dharam Yudh Morcha (Agitation for Religion), a movement by Shiromani Akali Dal (L), starts in Amritsar. Prakash Singh Badal leads the first jatha of 1,054 volunteers to court arrest at Manji Sahib in Amritsar.

Gurbaksh Singh from Pakka Kalan village hijacks an Indian Airlines Delhi- Srinagar flight 423, saying he has a bomb with him. He tries to take the flight, which has 70 foreigners on board, to Lahore but later opts to land it in Amritsar, where he’s arrested. The “bomb” turns out to be a rubber ball wrapped in cloth..

A man hurls two hand grenades and two bombs at a public function of Punjab CM Darbara Singh at Rahon in Jullundur district. At least 30 thirty people were injured in the blasts. The chief minister is struck by one of the bombs, but it fails to explode, and he escapes unhurt. The assailant was arrested later.

Manjit Singh hijacks Indian Airlines Flight 492 from Bombay – New Delhi and demands that it be taken to Lahore. Pakistani authorities deny permission, and the plane forced to land at Amritsar’s Raja Sansi airport where . Singh was shot dead by security forces after his gun jammed..
