The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI), Ludhiana, on February 1 foiled a major international drug smuggling attempt by seizing 30 packets containing 12.118 kg of opium from a courier office in Ludhiana district. Acting on specific intelligence that seven parcels bound for the United States (US) and Canada carried concealed contraband in violation of the NDPS Act, 1985, DRI officers intercepted the consignments at the courier facility.

Police have arrested four accused and remanded them to custody, with preliminary investigations indicating links to Shubham Lonkar, an associate of the gang.

The Lawrence Bishnoi gang has claimed responsibility for an attack on Pakistan-based gangster Shehzad Bhatti in Portugal. In a social media post, an individual identified as Randeep Malik warned that anyone speaking against India or Lawrence Bishnoi would face death. The post also alleged that Bhatti works as a proxy for Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI), assisting in recruiting youth for attacks in India, particularly in Punjab.

Three persons of Punjab origin, Harjot Singh, Taranveer Singh and Dayajeet Singh Billing have been charged by the Surrey Police in British Columbia, in connection with an extortion-related shooting incident in the Crescent Beach neighborhood, in Canada on February 1. The accused were arrested shortly after police received reports of gunshots and a small fire outside a residence near Crescent Road and 132 Street at around 3:50 am. Police said officers from the specialized Project Assurance unit were already patrolling the area due to a spike in extortion-related violence. The suspects were later located near 28 Avenue and 140 Street after allegedly abandoning a vehicle, fleeing on foot, and subsequently entering a rideshare vehicle.

Punjab Police have arrested 4,233 persons, including gangsters and their associates, after conducting 14,382 raids across the state under the ‘war on gangsters’ (Gangsters Te Vaar) campaign—Operation Prahar—over the past two weeks, said Special Director-General of Police (DGP) (Law and Order) Arpit Shukla on February 2. Police also seized 116 weapons, 262 live cartridges and 23 magazines. Preventive action was taken against 2,311 individuals, 4,008 were verified and released after questioning, and 283 proclaimed offenders were arrested during the drive.

Faridkot police have registered two separate cases after residents received extortion threats from callers claiming to be members of the Rohit Godara gang, in Faridkot district. The calls, reportedly made from international numbers, involved demands for money along with death threats. One complaint was filed by a Municipal Council driver, Chhaibar Singh, while the second case was lodged by a resident of the Green Avenue locality in Faridkot.

He claimed the attacks were aimed at destabilizing Pakistan, undermining the interests of Pakistan and the United States (US), and discouraging US investment in the country.
