The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal on December 8 welcomed the United Kingdom (UK)’s decision to sanction a British Sikh businessman, Gurpreet Singh Rehal and an entity, Babbar Akali Lehar, linked to organisations involved in terrorism in India. He said the move strengthens the global fight against terrorism and extremism and helps curb illicit financial flows and transnational crime networks. Jaiswal added that such individuals and entities pose a threat not only to India and the UK but to people worldwide, and reiterated India’s commitment to working closely with the UK on counter-terrorism and security cooperation. On December 4, the UK imposed an asset freeze and director disqualification on Gurpreet Singh Rehal and sanctioned Babbar Akali Lehar for promoting and supporting the Khalistani terrorist organisation Babbar Khalsa International (BKI), marking the first use of Britain’s Domestic Counter-Terrorism Regime.

Canadian authorities have identified the mastermind and shooters involved in the series of attacks on comedian Kapil Sharma’s Kaps Café in Canada. The two shooters, identified as Sharry and Diljot Rehal are of Punjabi origin and are believed to be residing in Canada. They have been labelled ‘most wanted’ in connection with the incidents. Investigators have also identified a gangster named Seepu as the alleged mastermind who directed the shooters. The duo shooters’ association with the Lawrence Bishnoi gang has further complicated the probe due to the gang’s suspected links to transnational crime. Police have released images of the suspects to seek public assistance, and Canadian law enforcement and federal agencies are coordinating closely with Indian authorities to track down all those involved.

A special National Investigation Agency (NIA) court in Mohali, Sahibzada Ajit Singh Nagar district, has rejected the bail plea of Akashdeep Singh, an accused in the August 14, 2020 hoisting of a Khalistan flag at the Moga deputy commissioner’s office. The court said the seriousness of the allegations, the evidence gathered so far, and the stage of the trial did not warrant bail. The prosecution opposed the plea, stating that Akashdeep had links with the banned Khalistani group Sikhs For Justice (SFJ) and that the incident was part of a broader conspiracy to promote a secessionist agenda, attracting serious charges including sedition.

Indian central agencies and Canadian police are intensively searching for two most-wanted shooters, Sharry and Diljot Rehal, involved in multiple firing incidents at Kapil Sharma’s Kap’s Café in Canada. The duo, allegedly linked to the Lawrence Bishnoi gang, is accused of carrying out three attacks that triggered concern in both Surrey and Mumbai. The Delhi Police Crime Branch identified the shooters after arresting a key associate. Investigators have also identified the alleged mastermind, a gangster named Seepu, who is believed to have directed the two Punjabi-origin shooters to open fire at the café on multiple occasions.

A Punjab-based businessman, identified as Abhishek Kumar, was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) under the anti-money laundering law in a drugs trafficking case. He was taken into custody on December 9 and remanded to six days by a special Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) court in Mohali. The ED case stems from a Punjab Police FIR alleging large-scale inter-state trafficking of psychotropic tablets and capsules, particularly Tramadol and Alprazolam, by a network of medicine retailers and wholesalers.

During a court hearing, it was revealed that Indian-origin man Vikram Sharma, who fled to India after being identified as one of the accused in the arson attack on Punjabi musician AP Dhillon’s vehicles at his home in British Columbia, Canada—allegedly on the directions of the Lawrence Bishnoi gang—was living in Canada illegally at the time of the incident. His student visa had expired in April 2024, and he was captured on CCTV setting fire to Dhillon’s car in September 2024. He is believed to be in India. According to the prosecutor, prior to the offence, Sharma had submitted fraudulent documents to Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada in an attempt to reinstate his student visa, but when the documents were found to be fake, he was instructed to appear for an in-person interview, which he did not attend.

Chabal Police, on the intervening night of December 10–11, busted a three-member heroin smuggling gang by arresting a woman, identified as Sharanjit Kaur alias Shanno, and seizing 701 grams of heroin in Chabal, Tarn Taran district. However, her husband, Happy Singh alias Happy, and their associate Harinder Singh of Chabal managed to flee the spot.

The probe revealed that he had been in contact with a handler in Doha, Qatar, during his stay abroad, and after returning to India he continued working as a ground courier, collecting narcotics from designated locations on instructions sent via WhatsApp.
