The incident occurred amid festive holiday gatherings, drawing sharp reactions from the Indian-origin community.

Moga police registered a case against Pritpal Singh for uploading photographs posing with weapons on social media in Chuharchak village of Moga district. Police said he shared multiple images on his Facebook profile, Pritpal Singh Khalsa, showing him with firearms. The action follows Punjab government directives to curb the glorification of weapons and maintain public order.

According to reports, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) is set to take over the case related to the grenade attack on YouTuber Navdeep Singh alias Roger Sandhu in March 2025. The case files, currently before a local court, will be transferred to the NIA’s special court in Mohali. Police records list 18 accused, of whom 10 have been arrested, while one has died. The main accused are Pakistan-based don Shahzad Bhatti and Zeeshan Akhtar of Shankar village in Nakodar in Jalandhar district. Akhtar and six other wanted accused are reportedly outside the country.

A Shahkot-based youth, Sharandeep Singh, missing for nearly two months, has reportedly crossed the India–Pakistan border and been apprehended in Kasur sector in Punjab, Pakistan. Pakistan released a photograph on December 24 showing him with Pakistan Rangers, though the circumstances under which he crossed the border remain unclear.

Police on December 25 arrested Manpreet Singh alias Manna, an alleged hitman of the Lucky Patial gang, and seized a .32-bore pistol, two live cartridges and a stolen motorcycle, after a brief encounter in which he was injured on Dakala Road in Patiala district. Police said he is the main accused in two shooting incidents in Rajpura and Patran in November and was already facing cases of drug peddling and Arms Act violations. He had reportedly been in contact with gangster Lucky Patial for nearly a year through a local operative, Piyush.

Ahead of the New Year, police deployed additional forces in the Pathankot border areas along Pakistan and intensified mock drills with the Army, Air Force, and Border Security Force (BSF). Citing the area’s sensitivity and the festive season, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Daljinder Singh Dhillon said on December 25 that additional state armed police and commandos had been deployed.

The pro-Khalistan group Sikhs For Justice (SFJ) on December 25 held a rally outside the Indian Embassy in Washington, D.C., United States (US) claiming solidarity with Bangladesh and alleging transnational repression by the Indian government. The group said the protest was triggered by the killing of Bangladeshi student leader Osman Hadi, which it termed a political assassination, and called for an independent international investigation. Addressing the rally, Khalistan Council member Dr. Bakhshish Singh Sandhu claimed Hadi was targeted for his political views and alleged support for the Khalistan movement.

A Canadian court has sentenced 22-year-old Indian-origin Parminder Singh to seven-and-a-half years in prison for his role in an organised extortion and arson racket targeting South Asian homebuilders in Edmonton, Alberta. The case is part of Project Gaslight, an Edmonton Police Service investigation into a gang that extorted wealthy homebuilders for protection money, leading to charges against seven other Indian-origin individuals. Prosecutors described Singh as a mid- to high-level gang member. He pleaded guilty to extortion for a criminal organisation, firing at a residence, and pointing a firearm at a police officer. Singh admitted to shooting nine rounds at a homebuilder’s house on October 11, 2023, on the instructions of senior gang members, and to continuing gang coordination from jail. After credit for time served, he will spend about four more years in prison and is expected to be deported after completing his sentence.
