A native of Kakroli in Haryana, Sheoran is an active gang member and is accused of involvement in the fatal shooting of Lavjeet inside the Bhiwani court premises in Haryana on September 4.

A Bathinda district court on December 22 issued a 30-day notice to Sikh hardliner Amritpal Singh Mehron, believed to be hiding in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), and his associate Ranjit Singh, directing them to surrender in connection with the murder of social media influencer Kanchan Kumari alias Kamal Kaur Bhabhi. Police said proclamation notices were pasted at their residences and lookout circulars issued against both. Kanchan’s decomposed body was found in a car near Adesh Medical University, Bathinda, on June 11. On June 13, Amritpal, a Nihang, allegedly released a video claiming responsibility for the murder. Two alleged accomplices, Jaspreet Singh and Nimaratjeet Singh, both Nihangs, were later arrested and sent to judicial custody. Police said the killing was allegedly carried out in the name of “moral policing.”

In a series of posts on X, Tamaki portrayed the incident as a failure of assimilation and national leadership, claiming that foreign political movements were being imported into the country. He alleged that participants were openly displaying Khalistan symbols, which he described as linked to terrorism, and accused authorities and political leaders of inaction and tacit support.

Punjab Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav, in a year-end briefing on December 23, said the Internal Security Wing busted 19 terror modules in 2025, solved 12 major terror cases, and arrested 131 persons. Seizures included nine rifles, 188 pistols/revolvers, 12 improvised explosive devices (IEDs), 11.62 kg of RDX, 54 hand grenades, 32 detonators, four rocket-propelled grenades (RPGs), a rocket launcher sleeve, timer switches, walkie-talkies, and remote-controlled devices. He said the Anti-Gangster Task Force (AGTF) and field units dismantled 416 gangster modules, arrested 992 criminals, and seized 620 weapons and 252 vehicles. With CBI coordination, 11 Red Notices and two Blue Notices were secured, leading to the deportation or arrest of gangsters like Anmol Bishnoi, Parminder Singh alias Pindi, Sukhdev Kumar alias Manish Bedi, and Sajan Masih alias Goru.

Under Yudh Nashiyan Virudh, Punjab police registered 29,784 FIRs, arrested 39,867 accused, and seized a record 2,021 kg of heroin in 2025, along with 26 kg of ICE, 698 kg of opium, 35,000 kg of poppy husk, 55.78 lakh intoxicant pills/capsules, and INR 16.81 crore in drug money. Punjab achieved an 88% conviction rate, accounting for nearly two-thirds of India’s heroin seizures, 25% of NDPS arrests, and 20% of NDPS cases. Preventive measures included admitting 23,940 people to de-addiction centres and referring 59,840 to OOAT clinics.

Amid controversy over the religious protests in South Auckland on December 20, New Zealand’s 2023 census data shows a continued decline in Christian denominations, with over 50% of the population declaring ‘no religion’. Of the total population of 4,993,923, as many as 2,576,049 identified as having no religious affiliation, up from 1,635,348 in 2013 and 2,264,601 in 2018, making ‘no religion’ the fastest-growing category. Christian denominations registered a steady decline. Pentecostals fell sharply from 45,777 in 2013 to 22,296 in 2018 and further to 19,245 in 2023—just 0.38% of the population. Other major denominations, including Anglican, Catholic, Methodist, Baptist and Presbyterian, also saw significant reductions, with all Christian denominations together numbering 715,722 (14.33%). In contrast, minority religions recorded growth. The Sikh population rose from 19,191 in 2013 to 40,908 in 2018 and 53,406 (1.07%) in 2023. Hindus increased from 89,085 in 2013 to 121,644 in 2018 and 142,008 in 2023, though not all may be of Indian origin, with many tracing roots to Fiji. Buddhist and Muslim populations also grew steadily. Notably, while Pentecostal Christianity is declining in New Zealand, its following has expanded rapidly in Punjab in recent years.
