Amritsar Rural Police on April 17 recovered a hand grenade along with 186 grams of heroin from the residence of Baljinder Singh, an associate of Harpreet Singh alias Happy Passia, following interrogation, in Macchiwala village in Ajnala in Amritsar district. Baljinder and his accomplice Palwinder Singh were arrested earlier on April 11 with firearms and heroin, and their involvement in a narco-terror module linked to Passia has been confirmed. The grenade was safely neutralised by the Bomb Disposal Squad.

Dal Khalsa president Paramjit Singh Mand stated in Amritsar on April 17 that the Akal Takht Jathedar should remain free from political and administrative influence, and that his organisation had submitted a detailed blueprint regarding the appointment, removal, and role of Takht Jathedars to Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) president Harjinder Singh Dhami. The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) arrested absconding gangster Harpreet Singh alias Happy Passia, in Sacramento, California, United States (US), on April 17 for his role in terror attacks in Punjab. Passia, a close associate of Pakistan-based gangster-turned-terrorist Harvinder Singh Sandhu alias Rinda, was wanted by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) for multiple grenade attacks. Earlier this year, the NIA had announced a reward of INR 5 lakh for information leading to his arrest. Passia had illegally entered the US in 2021 using a human trafficking network and was evading capture by using burner phones.

Police recently identified an inmate lodged in Gurdaspur Central Jail who was allegedly controlling drone operations for smuggling drugs and weapons from Pakistan, and arrested three individuals — Balwinder Singh, Kuldeep Singh, and a minor — in connection with the case, in Gurdaspur district. The arrests followed investigations into a recent drone-related incident in the Dorangla area near the international border (IB), where 2 kg of heroin, two pistols, four magazines, and 66 rounds of ammunition were recovered. During sustained questioning, the suspects revealed the inmate’s involvement in coordinating the illegal operations from jail.

The Union Ministry of Home Affairs (UMHA) recently downgraded the security cover of former National Investigation Agency (NIA) Director General and ex-Punjab DGP Dinkar Gupta from Z-plus to Y-category, now to be provided by the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF). Gupta was earlier granted Z-plus security in May last year due to threats from pro-Khalistan elements, but a recent assessment by central agencies found no fresh threat following his retirement from the Indian Police Service (IPS) on July 31, 2024. Under the Y-category cover, Gupta will now be guarded by around 12 security personnel, including two commandos.

According to sources, Army jawan Sukhcharan Singh, arrested by Punjab Police for providing online training to individuals involved in a grenade attack on YouTuber Rozer Sandhu’s residence in Jalandhar, belongs to the Sikh Light Infantry regiment. He has served in the Army for the past eight years, including a posting with a Rashtriya Rifles battalion in Jammu and Kashmir in 2021. His arrest has raised serious concerns within the security establishment, leading to both an internal Army inquiry and a police investigation into his alleged involvement. The motive behind his actions is still under investigation.

Punjab Police on April 19 revealed that they had busted two ISI-backed terror modules of the Babbar Khalsa International (BKI), which had links with France-based Satnam Singh alias Satta and Greece-based Jaswinder Singh alias Mannu Agwan and arrested 13 individuals in two separate operations, with seizing significant weaponry and explosives, including two rocket-propelled grenades (RPGs), a launcher, two improvised explosive devices (IEDs) weighing 2.5 kg each, two hand grenades with detonators, 2 kg of RDX with a remote control, five pistols, six magazines, 44 live cartridges, a wireless set, and three vehicles. In the first operation, the Counter Intelligence (CI) team of Jalandhar Police arrested Jagroop Singh, Jatinder Singh alias Honey, and Harpreet Singh while transporting arms and explosives near Lamma Pind Chowk in Jalandhar. In the second operation, Batala police arrested nine more individuals in Batala, Gurdaspur district.
