Panic spread in the Majitha area on Sunday after unidentified armed assailants shot dead a Punjab Police Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) while he was on his way to duty early in the morning.

The deceased was identified as ASI Joga Singh, a resident of Ghaniye Ke Bangar village in Batala, Gurdaspur district. He was posted in the Traffic Wing of the Amritsar Police Commissionerate.

According to police sources, the incident took place around 6 am on the Fatehgarh Churian–Majitha road when Singh was travelling towards Amritsar on his scooter.

Police said that about one kilometre before reaching Majitha, two unidentified assailants riding a motorcycle intercepted his scooter and opened fire at close range. Singh was hit by two bullets — one in the left side of the chest and another in the waist.

The officer succumbed to his injuries on the spot before help could arrive. The attackers fled immediately after carrying out the shooting.

Senior police officials, including SSP Suhail Qasim Mir, rushed to the spot soon after receiving information about the incident. The area was cordoned off and a forensic team was called in to collect evidence.

Police recovered empty bullet shells from the scene and have begun examining CCTV footage from nearby areas. A massive search operation has also been launched.

SSP Mir said the exact motive behind the attack was yet to be ascertained and that further investigation was under way.
