Tarn Taran Police on November 28 arrested Kanchanpreet Kaur, daughter of SAD leader Sukhwinder Kaur Randhawa, as part of efforts to dismantle the criminal network allegedly run by her Canada-based gangster husband, Amritpal Bath. Kanchanpreet faces multiple cases registered during the election period, including criminal intimidation and violations of the model code of conduct, as well as a separate case for allegedly using a fake passport. Police said she was arrested in connection with an FIR at Jhabal police station against Bath, who is booked for criminal intimidation during the bypoll campaign and faces over two dozen cases, including murder, attempt to murder, and UAPA charges. Authorities also alleged that she illegally entered India via the Nepal border, evading immigration checks.

Gurdaspur senior superintendent of police (SSP) Aditya said on November 27 that police are investigating the Khalistan Liberation Army’s (KLA) claim of carrying out a grenade attack outside the Gurdaspur Police Station on November 25, which left four people injured. The blast occurred a day before Chief Minister (CM) Bhagwant Mann’s scheduled visit to inaugurate a sugar mill. While police had initially attributed the incident to a truck’s tyre burst, a social media post from the “Khalistan Liberation Army” later claimed responsibility for the attack.

According to police, Punjab has seen a surge in incidents of grenade attacks over the past year in which miscreants, often acting on the instructions of banned organisations, have targeted police and other establishments. In the last three months alone, three such blasts occurred in the state—each initially dismissed as a non-terror incident. Since September 2024, at least 21 suspicious grenade attacks have been reported, 15 of them targeting police installations.

An arrested suspect in the November 15 killing of Naveen Arora, son of RSS leader Baldev Raj Arora, identified as Badal was killed in a shootout near the cremation ground at Mamu Joya village in Jalalabad, Fazilka district, on November 27. Police said Badal, who had allegedly fired at Naveen, was arrested on November 26. During interrogation, he disclosed plans to flee to Rajasthan with two accomplices, Raju and Sonu. When police took him to meet them near the cremation ground, the two assailants opened fire, prompting retaliation in which Badal was killed. Police have so far arrested six accused in the case, including a Ludhiana-based woman, Bhawna; three others — Gursimran Singh alias Jatin Kali, Kanav, and Harsh; and Badal. Another accused has also been apprehended, though police have withheld the identity to avoid compromising the ongoing investigation. However, despite multiple arrests and two shootouts over the past two weeks, the motive behind Naveen’s killing — whether ideological or driven by personal enmity — remains unclear.

Director General of Police (DGP) Punjab Gaurav Yadav said on November 27 that Punjab Police have recorded 324 encounters with gangsters since April 2022, resulting in the neutralization of 24 dreaded gangsters/criminals and the arrest of 515 others, of whom 319 sustained bullet injuries. Three police personnel lost their lives and 41 were injured in these operations. He added that, over the past three-and-a-half years, the Punjab Police have busted 962 gangster/criminal modules, arrested 2,536 gangsters/criminals, and recovered 2,086 illegal weapons, 564 vehicles used in crimes, 79 kg of heroin, and INR 4.69 crore in drug money. The data comes amid renewed concerns over rising gangsterism in Punjab.

Two motorcycle-borne assailants opened fire at the house of Daljit Singh Raju, Phagwara coordinator of the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP)’s ‘Yudh Nashian Virudh’ drive, near Darvesh Pind village on the Phagwara–Jandiala road in Kapurthala district on November 27. No injuries were reported. Raju said around 23 rounds were fired at about 1:13 a.m., shattering window and door panes. Sources added that a hand-written slip, in English, was found at the site mentioning the name of a group and an amount of INR 5 crore.
