Avtar Singh Atwal, Deputy Inspector General - Jalandhar range, shot dead by a follower of Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale at the steps of Golden Temple in Amritsar. Atwal was leaving the Golden Temple after offering prayers. Two others were injured.

A man hurls two hand grenades and two bombs at a public function of Punjab CM Darbara Singh at Rahon in Jullundur district. At least 30 thirty people were injured in the blasts. The chief minister is struck by one of the bombs, but it fails to explode, and he escapes unhurt. The assailant was arrested later.

Gurbaksh Singh from Pakka Kalan village hijacks an Indian Airlines Delhi- Srinagar flight 423, saying he has a bomb with him. He tries to take the flight, which has 70 foreigners on board, to Lahore but later opts to land it in Amritsar, where he’s arrested. The “bomb” turns out to be a rubber ball wrapped in cloth..
