Avtar Singh Atwal, Deputy Inspector General - Jalandhar range, shot dead by a follower of Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale at the steps of Golden Temple in Amritsar. Atwal was leaving the Golden Temple after offering prayers. Two others were injured.

Shiromani Akali Dal begins a “Rasta Roko Agitation” throughout the state as part of its Dharam Yudh Morcha. At least 21 people killed and 61 injured in the police firing in various places across Punjab.

A man hurls two hand grenades and two bombs at a public function of Punjab CM Darbara Singh at Rahon in Jullundur district. At least 30 thirty people were injured in the blasts. The chief minister is struck by one of the bombs, but it fails to explode, and he escapes unhurt. The assailant was arrested later.

Gurbaksh Singh from Pakka Kalan village hijacks an Indian Airlines Delhi- Srinagar flight 423, saying he has a bomb with him. He tries to take the flight, which has 70 foreigners on board, to Lahore but later opts to land it in Amritsar, where he’s arrested. The “bomb” turns out to be a rubber ball wrapped in cloth..

At the All World Sikh Convention organized by Akali Dal High Command, Harchand Singh Longowal is authorised to launch “Dharam Yudh Morcha” – a civil disobedience movement, from August 1982. He is also asked to shift the “Nehar Roko Morcha” to Amritsar.

Violence erupts after Dal Khalsa members throw two severed heads of cows near temples at Katra Ahluwalia and Bazaar Kathian in Amritsar. One man killed, several injured, and a few shops were shops were burnt. More than 350 people arrested over a period of two days, and curfew imposed in Amritsar and Patiala.
