On February 2, Punjab Police, on day 338 of its “Yudh Nashian Virudh” campaign, registered 81 first information reports (FIRs), arrested 81 drug smugglers and seized 1.3 kg of heroin, 1053 intoxicant tablets/capsules and INR 1.23 lakhs drug money from the possession of arrested persons, across the state.

Punjab Police have arrested 4,233 persons, including gangsters and their associates, after conducting 14,382 raids across the state under the ‘war on gangsters’ (Gangsters Te Vaar) campaign—Operation Prahar—over the past two weeks, said Special Director-General of Police (DGP) (Law and Order) Arpit Shukla on February 2. Police also seized 116 weapons, 262 live cartridges and 23 magazines. Preventive action was taken against 2,311 individuals, 4,008 were verified and released after questioning, and 283 proclaimed offenders were arrested during the drive.

The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI), Ludhiana, on February 1 foiled a major international drug smuggling attempt by seizing 30 packets containing 12.118 kg of opium from a courier office in Ludhiana district. Acting on specific intelligence that seven parcels bound for the United States (US) and Canada carried concealed contraband in violation of the NDPS Act, 1985, DRI officers intercepted the consignments at the courier facility.

Ludhiana police have registered a case against notorious gangster Donny Bal after an extortion demand of INR 2 crore was allegedly made in his name from a local businessman, Jagjit Singh, in Ludhiana district. The victim reported receiving repeated WhatsApp threat calls, including one on January 17 in which the caller identified himself as Donny Bal and threatened to kill him if the demand was not met. Donny Bal is among the gangsters whose networks were recently targeted by Punjab Police under Operation Prahar.

Amritsar (Rural) police on January 30 arrested two persons, identified as Sukhraj Singh and Amritpal Singh and seized 51.5 kg of heroin packed in 103 packets in Gharinda, Amritsar district. Police said the accused were in active connivance with a Pakistan-based handler and were allegedly involved in cross-border drug trafficking.

Punjab Director General of Police Gaurav Yadav on January 30 held a meeting with senior officers of the Border Range to review the rising cases of extortion and gangster violence. The range includes Batala, Gurdaspur, Tarn Taran, Amritsar (Rural) and Pathankot districts. District police chiefs and Additional Director General of Police (ADGP)-rank officers attended the meeting, where the surge in extortion and gangster activity, particularly in Batala, was discussed in detail.

Ludhiana police on January 30 arrested a drug peddler, Tarnveer Singh alias Dhanna, and seized 273 grams of heroin and 61 grams of ICE (methamphetamine) from his possession at Kohara Chowk in Ludhiana district. Preliminary investigations suggest the drug supply was being managed by a Punjab native based in the United States, who allegedly recruited local youth to run the network.
