The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on April 29 strongly criticised a march by five Sikh organisations marking the 40th anniversary of the so-called “Khalistan Declaration,” asserting that any attempt to mislead Sikhs and disturb Punjab’s peace would fail. The procession was taken out from Burj Akali Baba Phoola Singh to the Golden Temple. BJP Punjab spokesperson Sarchand Singh said some Sikh leaders were invoking the Sarbat Khalsa congregation of January 26, 1986, at the Akal Takht to serve their political interests.

Khanna police on April 28 arrested 10 suspects in eight separate cases, seizing 80 intoxicating pills, 12 grams of ICE (crystal meth), 19.2 grams of heroin, and 16 grams of narcotic powder, in Ludhiana district.

Patiala Police on April 28 arrested four “highly radicalised” pro-Khalistan accused, allegedly part of an ISI-backed terror module linked to the April 27 rail track blast in Patiala, identified as Pardeep Singh Khalsa, Kulwinder Singh, Satnam Singh alias Satta, and Gurpreet Singh alias Gopi and recovered military-grade material including a hand grenade, two .30 bore pistols with ammunition, sophisticated communication devices suspected to be intended for further detonations, and laptops used to stay in contact with handlers, from the accused in Tarn Taran district. Another module member was killed while attempting to detonate the explosive and his mutilated body was later found at the blast site near Bothonia village between Shambu and Rajpura in Patiala district on April 27. According to investigators, the arrested individuals are habitual offenders facing multiple FIRs. Police identified Pardeep Singh Khalsa as the kingpin of the module, alleging he maintained links with Malaysia-based pro-Khalistani elements as well as Pakistan-based arms suppliers. Initial investigations suggest Khalsa facilitated the movement of radicalised youth to Malaysia for training before assigning them roles in terror-related activities. The accused are also believed to have formed a radical outfit named “Chalda Vaheer Chakarwarti, Attariye.”

Khalistani terrorist organisation, Khalistan Tiger Force (KTF) on April 28, through a social media post, claimed responsibility for the April 27 rail track blast in Patiala, in which a suspect was killed while attempting to detonate the explosive meant to damage the track. A suspected KTF operative, Jaswinder Singh Multani, currently based in Germany, reportedly made the claim. Meanwhile, noting that this was the second blast targeting a freight corridor in the past three months, a senior police officer indicated that a probe by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) is likely. While initially treated as a low-intensity explosion, investigators have since concluded that it was an attempted detonation, police said.

According to sources, investigators now believe recent railway track explosions in Punjab were not just meant to create fear, but to disrupt the economy by targeting key freight infrastructure, especially the Eastern Dedicated Freight Corridor (EDFC) linking Ludhiana to West Bengal. This corridor is vital for moving industrial and agricultural goods, and disruptions could impact supply chains across northern and eastern India. Special Director General of Police (DGP) (Railways) Shashi Prabha Dwivedi said similarities in recent incidents suggest a common network. Both the January 23 blast near Sirhind and the April 27 attempt near Rajpura were timed with passing goods trains, indicating a clear focus on disrupting freight movement rather than harming passengers. DGP indicated that such attacks reflect a shift in strategy, with critical infrastructure like freight corridors—vital to economic activity—being increasingly viewed as high-impact vulnerabilities.

The mother of Jagroop Singh, who died in the April 27 railway track blast near Patiala, on April 28 claimed that her younger son, Satnam Singh—detained by Patiala Police for questioning—is innocent and not involved in any unlawful activity. Jagroop Singh was killed when an explosive device detonated during an alleged attempt to sabotage the track. “He has nothing to do with this. He was living on his own,” she said, referring to Satnam Singh.

Patiala Police on April 28 said the low-intensity blast on a railway track near Bothonia village, between Shambu and Rajpura in Patiala district, on April 27 was a “detonation attempt by the accused,” who died in the explosion. Patiala Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Varun Sharma said that, “We are working on the case along with the Government Railway Police and the Railway Protection Force.”

Bhindi Saida police station SHO (Station House Officer) Shashpal Singh was arrested for alleged procedural lapses in handling a major drug seizure near the India–Pakistan border in Amritsar district. Amritsar (Rural) Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Sohail Qasim Mir said a drone carrying suspected heroin and ammunition crashed in Bhagtupura Bet village and was seized by the SHO. However, the SHO failed to record the seizure or file an FIR, and a preliminary inquiry confirmed negligence by him and his gunman.

Waris Punjab De on April 27 alleged that Sikh inmates were being harassed and their religious sentiments disrespected in Punjab’s prisons, urging immediate action from the state government and the Director General of Police (Prisons). In the statement, Tarsem Singh, father of Khadoor Sahib Member of Parliament (MP) Amritpal Singh, described reports of mistreatment in jails across the state as serious and disturbing, raising concerns over the treatment of Sikh prisoners.

According to reports, Sikh hardline and separatist organisations have announced a series of events in India and abroad to mark the 40th anniversary of Khalistan Declaration. Programmes are scheduled in Amritsar and in cities across Europe and North America, including Brussels, Belgium; the United Kingdom (UK); the United States (US); and Canada. In Punjab, groups led by Dal Khalsa, Shiromani Akali Dal (Amritsar), Panch Pardani Jatha and Jathedar Hawara Committee have announced that an 'ardas' will be held at Sri Akal Takht Sahib on April 29. Leaders said a policy document outlining the future course of the Sikh sovereignty movement will also be released outside Takht Secretariat the same day. According to organisers, members of the Sikh diaspora will hold parallel programmes in Brussels and the US on April 29, followed by events in Canada on May 2 and the UK on May 3.

Police on April 27 arrested a man, identified as Hardeep Singh alias Deep, for allegedly vandalising gurdwara property and hurting religious sentiments in Nakodar, Jalandhar district. The complainant alleged that the accused damaged glass panes at Gurdwara Sri Phlai Sahib and used abusive language at the site, thereby hurting the religious sentiments of the local community.

A man, identified as Jagroop Singh, was found dead near the site of a low-intensity blast on a railway track near Bothonia village between Shambu and Rajpura in Patiala district around 10 pm on April 27. His body, torn into pieces, was recovered from the spot. Investigators recovered wires, explosive material, two motorcycles, and a damaged mobile phone from the scene. A senior official said the evidence suggests he may have died while attempting to plant the device, adding that the probe is at an early stage. Authorities suspect the involvement of more than two individuals, with forensic and bomb squads deployed for further investigation.

Two unidentified youths hurled a grenade at a shop owned by BJP leader Ashok Sharma in the Islamabad area of Gurdaspur district on April 27, but it failed to detonate as the pin was not removed. Sharma’s son, Atal Sharma, also a BJP leader, who was present at the shop at the time, escaped unhurt. “The grenade could have caused immense damage had it detonated. People living in the crowded area and nearby shopkeepers had a providential escape,” a senior police officer said.

It was spotted around 5:30 am in the paper manufacturing division after workers noticed an unidentified object falling from the sky, which was later confirmed to be a drone.

Two persons, identified as Kashmir Singh and Jugraj Singh, were shot dead while another person was injured after unidentified assailants opened fire at them in Bhoma village in Batala, Gurdaspur district on April 27. According to police, preliminary investigations revealed that the attackers fired indiscriminately at the three youths while they were walking through the village. Two died on the spot, while the third victim, Jugraj Singh sustained serious bullet injuries.

According to official sources, intelligence agencies have issued a fresh alert about attempts by the banned outfit Babbar Khalsa International (BKI) to revive the Khalistan movement in Punjab through a revised strategy focused on rural radicalisation and low-intensity urban attacks. Officials note that several such plots have been foiled in recent years, forcing the group to recalibrate its approach. Earlier efforts to recruit and radicalise youth in urban areas reportedly met limited success due to increased public awareness and tighter security monitoring. As a result, BKI is now shifting its recruitment focus to rural regions, where misinformation is perceived to spread more easily. The group is believed to be targeting unemployed and less-educated youth considered more vulnerable to propaganda, while planning low-intensity attacks in urban centres, including Chandigarh.

The Amritsar Rural Police on April 25 arrested four alleged members of an extortion gang—Ram Singh alias Roman, Harpreet Singh alias Happy, Satnam Singh, and Sikander Singh— and seized two .30 bore pistols, four live cartridges, and motorcycles used in the crime, in Amritsar district. The accused are reportedly linked to the notorious Happy Jatt gang, whose members face multiple cases of murder, attempted murder, and extortion. The arrests followed a complaint by Surinder Kumar, a property dealer from Jyotisar Colony in Jandiala Guru, Amritsar district, who reported that on the night of April 19, two unidentified youths on motorcycles opened fire at his residence, discharging around a dozen rounds. No injuries were reported, though several bullets hit the gate and boundary wall.

Punjab Police on April 25 arrested an associate of gangster Arzoo Bishnoi and recovered a .32 bore pistol along with three live cartridges from an undisclosed location in Punjab. The arrested individual, whose identity has not been revealed, is wanted in a murder case in Rajasthan and carries a bounty. Arzoo Bishnoi is linked to the Lawrence Bishnoi gang, which has been involved in targeted assassinations and the elimination of rival gang members.

Khadoor Sahib Member of Parliament (MP) Amritpal Singh, accused in the Ajnala police station violence case, has been remanded to five-day judicial custody after his two-day police remand ended on April 24. He was taken into custody following the lapse of his detention under the National Security Act (NSA). Singh appeared before the Ajnala Sub-Divisional Court via video conference from Dibrugarh. As the police did not seek an extension of remand, the court ordered judicial custody. He will be sent back to Dibrugarh Central Jail and is scheduled to appear again on April 30.

Former Deputy Chief Minister and Gurdaspur MP Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa has reportedly received a threat message from the Lawrence Bishnoi gang after opposing the release of the documentary “Lawrence of Punjab.” The message warned that the documentary “will be released at any cost” and told those named to “prepare their shrouds,” adding that the group would no longer seek money and would instead resort to violence using bullets and bombs. Randhawa, who had called for a ban on the series, said he has informed Punjab DGP Gaurav Yadav about the threat. Similar WhatsApp messages were also reportedly sent to several prominent figures, including Punjab Congress chief Amarinder Singh Raja Warring, Shiromani Akali Dal leader Bikram Singh Majithia, and Balkaur Singh, among others.

The arrest of alleged drug peddlers Swaran Singh and Shamsher Singh alias Shera, following the seizure of 64.5 kg of heroin in Mahal village, Amritsar, on April 18, has led investigators to a suspected Pakistan-backed arms trafficking network. During interrogation, the duo reportedly revealed that a weapons consignment—comprising around 20 sophisticated pistols and an AK assault rifle—had been hidden in the Ajnala border area after being smuggled from Pakistan via drones. Joint teams of police and the Border Security Force (BSF) are now conducting search operations in the sector. Investigations indicate that the two were part of a cross-border narcotics and arms smuggling network, with consignments dropped at designated border points using drones. Police sources say they were acting under the direction of Harpartap Singh alias Happo, a Jasraur native currently based in Portugal, who is believed to be linked to Pakistan-based handlers operating under the alias “Moosa.

Punjab Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav on April 24 stated that, following inputs about potential glorification of organised crime, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (MoIB) directed OTT platform ZEE5 not to release the documentary “Lawrence of Punjab.” He noted that the film’s mix of dramatization and real footage could mislead youth and disrupt the state’s social harmony. Acting on these concerns, Punjab Police had approached the Ministry, the nodal authority for OTT content regulation in India.

On April 23, police claimed to have solved an extortion case with the arrest of five gang members who had demanded INR 50 lakh from a sarpanch (village head) in Samrala, Ludhiana district. The victim, Baljit Singh of Manjali Kalan village, had received a threat call on April 18 in which the caller warned of shooting him if the demand was not met.

Preliminary investigations suggest he had been in contact with an ISI handler via mobile communication and is suspected of sharing photographs and sensitive information related to military installations.

Amritsar Police on Apri 23 arrested Khadoor Sahib Member of Parliament (MP) Amritpal Singh from Dibrugarh Jail, Assam, in connection with the Ajnala police station violence case after his detention under the National Security Act (NSA) expired. He was produced before the Ajnala Sub-Divisional Court, Amritsar, via video-conferencing, where police sought a 15-day remand, but the court granted two days of police custody. He will remain lodged in Dibrugarh during this period. Earlier, citing security and law and order concerns, the Punjab and Haryana High Court (HC) permitted the state to keep him in Dibrugarh Jail even after the NSA detention ended and allowed all proceedings to be conducted virtually.

A local court in Patiala has declared Canada-based gangster-turned-designated terrorist Arshdeep Singh Gill alias Arsh Dala, a native of Moga district, a proclaimed offender after he failed to appear in a criminal case, in Patiala district. The FIR, registered on October 4, 2024, at Sanaur police station under provisions of the BNS and the Arms Act, names several accused from Mansa and Muktsar districts. Investigations indicate the group was part of an organised gang involved in extortion, robbery, and intimidation of traders and businessmen using illegal weapons. During the probe, Arsh Dalla’s name also surfaced as a key figure linked to the gang, following which he was formally nominated in the case.

On April 23, four schools in Ludhiana received bomb threat emails, prompting authorities to alert the police in Ludhiana district. The messages also reportedly warned of a blackout in Punjab on April 24. Anti-sabotage checks were conducted and the schools were evacuated as a precaution, with parents asked to take their children home. All premises were later declared safe.

The series, scheduled for release on April 27, reportedly portrays the life and criminal trajectory of gangster Lawrence Bishnoi, including references to major incidents such as the murder of Sidhu Moose Wala. In a letter to the ministry, Special Director General of Police (DGP) (Cybercrime) V. Neeraja warned that the content—featuring dramatized portrayals, real footage, and narrative elements—could glorify and amplify organised crime. Police also requested that even the trailer be restricted from global circulation.

Amritsar (Rural) Police have reached Dibrugarh, Assam, to formally arrest Khadoor Sahib Member of Parliament (MP) Amritpal Singh in connection with the February 2023 Ajnala police station attack case. He is likely to be arrested on April 23 following the expiry of his detention under the National Security Act (NSA). Amritpal has been lodged in Dibrugarh Central Jail since April 23, 2023, after being taken into custody under the NSA.
